Strength exists in every community. Opportunity should, too.
Introducing Start From Strength Foundation and its work to expand access to strengths-centered human development.
A person’s opportunity to grow should not depend entirely on the resources available to their school, recovery organization, or community. Yet access to educational experiences, trained facilitators, and continued support often depends on what a local organization can afford and sustain.
Start from Strength begins with the capacities people already carry: resilience, self-awareness, authenticity, creativity, and the ability to connect with others. Making opportunities to develop those capacities more accessible is the purpose behind Start From Strength Foundation.
We are introducing the Foundation as a Kentucky nonprofit organization created to advance this work through charitable programming, education, community partnerships, and research. Its new permanent page is now live at StartFromStrength.org/foundation.
Opening more doors to development
The Foundation aims to reduce financial and practical barriers to strengths-centered learning. Depending on community needs and available resources, that work may include facilitated programming, participant materials, digital learning, and subsidized access.
The setting might be a school, a recovery organization, a justice or reentry program, or a community working to strengthen connection and opportunity. Each brings different needs, relationships, and resources. A useful partnership begins by understanding those conditions and considering what people will need to keep applying what they learn.
That continuity matters. People carry their development into relationships, work, education, and the transitions that connect those parts of life. The Foundation’s aim is to support growth that can travel with them.
Building capacity within communities
Access to an educational experience is one part of the work. Communities also need people prepared to guide it.
The Foundation’s priorities include education and training for peer-support specialists, educators, recovery and prevention professionals, community leaders, and others who help people navigate change. Preparing local people to use the approach well can help a community build capacity beyond a single project or funding cycle.
The educational approach draws on the Trait-Based Model and the Start from Strength experience. Trait-Based offers a framework for recognizing and developing human capacities; Start from Strength brings that framework into learning, reflection, relationships, and everyday practice.
Learning alongside the work
The Foundation also plans to conduct and support research and evaluation, collaborate with educational institutions and researchers, and share findings that can strengthen practice.
That means examining outcomes alongside participant experiences, identifying limitations, and allowing what is learned to inform what happens next. Community partnerships can help bring practical questions into that process, including what makes participation possible and what support people need to continue using what they learn.
An invitation to build together
Start From Strength Foundation Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors and is distinct from CTBT Group LLC, a separate commercial organization. The Foundation is pursuing federal recognition of tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3).
We welcome conversations with schools, recovery organizations, community groups, public agencies, researchers, and philanthropic partners in Kentucky and Appalachia, as well as communities nationally.
If your organization sees an opportunity to expand access to strengths-centered human development, we would welcome the chance to learn about the people you serve and what a meaningful partnership could make possible.
